Mr. Salvey's Fruit Market Est. 1986-1993
Gary Tedesco received a brick in honor of his father who owned a produce stand at Findlay Market for many years.
Gary writes, “Going to the Market on Saturday was like going to a family reunion. We would park in the ally, and I would walk by and say good morning to all the merchants. Then there was our stand, Salvey’s Fruit Market, on the Race Street side of the Market. My Dad was an artist at displaying his produce - never having the same two colors touching each other, and we displayed our goods beautifully! I started working with my Dad at the age of eight - just like all of my siblings did. In my time at Findlay Market, I learned so much about life and people. We catered to the poorest of the poor, and wealthiest members of our city, and everyone was treated with the same amount of respect.
I eventually bought my Dad's business in 1993. I ran it successfully for ten years, and I credit my success to my upbringing at Findlay Market. My Dad taught me how to sell, market, negotiate and never be intimidated by anyone. I have so many fond memories of the Market and continue to stop down regularly to buy my meat, cheese, produce, wine and fresh-baked bread.
After my dad passed, my daughter Maria, presented me with a brick and the greatest honor I ever received. It reads, ‘Like Father, Like Son.’”
